The Grand Canyon is one of America’s greatest landforms because it was all formed by the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon takes up most of northwestern Arizona and is mostly surrounded by desert. It is about 1 mile deep and 1 to 18 miles in width. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States surpassed only by Washington D.C and New York City.
The Grand Canyon was formed 6 million years ago. In fact, some of the rocks in the Grand Canyon are more than 2 billion years old. The Colorado River has flowed through the Canyon for centuries. Many fossils were discovered in the canyon and people could see what kind of animals lived in the canyon many centuries ago. John Wesley Powell was the first white man to lead a river expedition in the Canyon. In the year 1919 the Grand Canyon National Park was established. Now that the environment is changing due to global warming the water level in the Canyon has dropped to almost half its capacity.
